Book of the Moment: Windblowne

October 15th, 2010

"Windblowne", by Stephen Messer, is an engaging new fantasy-adventure about a boy named Oliver who grows up in the treehouse town of Windblowne. The highlight of the year is the kite festival, but Oliver struggles to make even one kite fly - or even hold together - successfully. Just when he is too discouraged to go on, Oliver is thrown into the middle of a magical mystery, facing peril and as many twists as a kite's tail. Messer uses simple language and straightforward writing with great effectiveness, conjuring up a memorable world that can be approached by keen younger readers as well as readers aged 9-12 in search of something new. Additionally, this novel features cover art by Erwin Madrid which makes for one of the best covers we've seen in years.

Book of the Moment: The Quiet Book

September 10th, 2010

"The Quiet Book", by Deborah Underwood, illustrated by Renata Liwska.

The Quiet Book is a gentle and observant book perfect for naptimes and bedtimes. The illustrations have a soft, nostalgic quality, and contain a few surprises. Readers learn about different kinds of quiet - some good, like "First snowfall quiet", and some more difficult, like "Jelly side down quiet". A clever and beautifully composed book, this is a wonderful addition to any collection. Since the author and illustrator share their favourite kinds of quiet on the back flap, we'd like to add our own:

The Gruffalo
The Gruffalo's Child
How to Catch a Star
There's a Wocket in my Pocket!

Book of the Moment: Blue Chameleon

August 27th, 2010

"Blue Chameleon", by Emily Gravett.

Blue Chameleon, by Emily Gravett, is for very early readers or pre-readers to learn colours with the help of an unusual chameleon trying on a variety of different looks. The illustrations have all the liveliness we've come to expect from Ms. Gravett's books.

Book of the Moment: Bridget's Beret

August 7th, 2010

"Bridget's Beret", by Tom Lichtenheld.

Tells the story of the very artistic Bridget, who faces a terrible case of artist's block when she loses her (very artistic) beret. The depiction of Bridget's artistic gloom, and the way she rediscovers her creativity through the help of lemonade and the great masters, is a delight for artistic children and adults alike.

Book of the Moment: Ella's Umbrellas

August 1st, 2010

"Ella's Umbrellas" is by Jennifer Lloyd, with illustrations by Ashley Spires.

Ella is proud of her umbrella collection, but she has so many umbrellas that her mother makes a decision: no new umbrellas until Ella can get rid of the old! Ella's charming solution is also a positive message about generosity, and not becoming too attached to our possessions - with quirky illustrations and a satisfying ending.

Book of the Moment: Ladybug Girl

July 21st, 2010

Ladybug Girl, by David Soman and Jacky Davis.

It's the first in a series of books about an imaginative little girl who overcomes the challenges of loneliness, older brothers, and new situations, in the name of adventure. The illustrations perfectly capture the feelings and expressions of a little girl.
